Grown-up Christmas List

Christmas Past

I remember one Christmas year when we were little kids that my dad figured that we had more money to spare. So he picked out a family through a charity organization and we bought this family Christmas presents and a turkey. We went shopping for the kids buying them presents. I think that there were two little kids in this family. I remember it being fun, picking out presents for another little kid who had nothing. Fun until I realized how destitute they really were. We brought them a turkey and never leaving any kind of detail out, my mom also made sure that they had enough to eat for the rest of the Christmas week by buying eggs and bread and such. Just some basic groceries.

I remember going to the family’s house on Christmas Eve to deliver every wrapped gift we bought and the food. The family invited us into their tiny apartment. There were a couple of wooden chairs in the small square living room and a bare tree with two unwrapped toys underneath it. We didn’t have a lot of money, but this family was worse off than we were and that was plain to see.

Christmas Present

I never really liked A Christmas Carol but I am sure that my mom — it being her favourite Christmas story — will watch it again this year. Scrooged is OK, but I am sure that my brother will bring that DVD this holiday to my mom’s house as this is his favourite Christmas story. I watched the Ben Affleck holiday movie, Surviving Christmas when it came out and will most likely rent it again for this Christmas. Ben Affleck is actually funny in it and I must admit — seeing as it is A Ben Affleck Movie — that I laughed out loud. I don’t remember details, or a particular scene (yes, being schizophrenic has its downsides — unless you consider remembering anything from this movie a downside) but I remember laughing out loud.

This Christmas should be fun. Watching movies, playing games, eating grain-fed turkey with stuffing. Great stuff. Especially when you can spend time with your family. That’s the star on the tree.

Christmas Future

This year we aren’t giving gifts to each other besides to our little child, niece, grand-daughter, Jeana. We are each giving money to our favourite charity instead. This year will signal the end to giving each other gifts. Presents will go to children of the family and charity. It’s nice to get older. I don’t get any wiser (as my Christmas movie pick is any indication) but I do realize when things come around again; come full-circle. As it should.
