Ravi Kajuria had an idea for a short film and he brought it to The Breath Films to work the idea together. In the winter of 2004 Shane and Ravi shot, edited, and directed this short film. Watch the short film here >>>

You Can't Eat Oil
This is a short documentary film we made in 2003. It is about President George Bush's desire to drill for oil in the artic refuge. Well, it's actually about the Indigenous People who live there, Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (Yukon, Canada), and who fight for their peoples survival. We made this little short when we first bought FCP version 1.5. That's old, but the message and importance of Sandra Newman's message is sadly not old.

Biltamore
"One of my all-time favorite indie bands was, or is - I'm not sure what they're doing now - is drummer. They had one song that just killed me and reminded me of Catcher in the Rye for some reason. The tune was killer and I put a little video together from some photos the band gave me. I made the whole thing in Flash, version 3, when I was trying to figure out how to use the program. It's actually one of my favourite things I've done since it just happened in a couple hours of experimenting and getting carried away the emotion of a song I love." - Shane Belcourt

Miracles Here
"The VERY first thing I did when I bought the Flash program was make this video. I often think the best work I ever do is when I'm not thinking, I'm just trying things out. This is set to a song I wrote and came out on my second album, Hands Like Mine, back in 2000. The song was written and recorded in the same vain - one take, no thinking, just doing." - Shane Belcourt

miskate
"When we bought our Xl1s camera package in 2001 we bought it for two reasons: one, was to use it for our jobs shooting interviews for the web for Aboriginal organizations. The other, we hoped, more key reason as so we could shoot our own movies with it. So, I got together with Ravi Kajuria and Duane Murray and we each jammed our own little short script and everyone directed someone else's script, and not their own. This is the segment we put together by the end of it." - Shane Belcourt

hymn
"The second thing I made when I got the Flash program was this video segment honoring the death of a national hero, Pierre Trudeau - a former Canadian Prime Minister. We were all getting swept up in the emotion of his passing, and this tribute was something that just came together one night so we could include it in our old on-line ezine." - Shane Belcourt

Moons
In Febrauary 2004, The Breath Films made a little short film, written and directed by Shane Belcourt. The quick summary of it is this: "Stop me if you've heard this before. Two people. Chad & Cynthia. Workmates, friends, collegues. Brought together by something. Maybe it was desitiny, maybe it was fate. Whatever it was, it was something so powerful that they dropped everything they had and flew to Vegas to light their hearts anew. This is not their story. This is a story about the things you leave behind"

Oddities to Watch:

Cash Cow in the studio
"Jordan O'Connor's Cash Cow is one of my favourite bands of all time. It's four friends led by Jordan, my oldest friend. As a band leader and an artist he really favours things to be free and without judgment. For him, it seems that creating the art for yourself is the only point - that's it. You'll get a true sense of that watching these clips as they set up the tune, go over any last 'notes' over-looking the charts, before they lay down the song in one final take. Also, they did 26 tracks in one day. Crazy." - Shane Belcourt

Lighting
"One night in Toronto we had the most amazing thunder and lightning show going outside my window. It was, ah, scaring the shit outta me. So, I turned the camera on it to get some distance and perspective on it - isn't that what all the arts are for for each of us?" - Shane Belcourt

Cash Cow Live
"Cash Cow was doing a live show up at the Stockey Centre in Parry Sound. It was a big gig, in a really nice theatre. So, I bought the camera along. Shooting with a single camera in the heat of the moment is great - you only get one take and you have to focus and listen more, there's nothing to direct or remember. Just point the camera at something that seems interesting and stay on it for as long as you can. And, as you'll see, the talk before the whole shot started was shocking and hilarious and awkward. When it's so awkward it's painful, it makes me laugh. I think out of recognition of my own awkwardness and failures I guess. And with that, enjoy!" - Shane Belcourt

Shane Anthony - "Let Me Back In"
"As I've said before, when I think about something it is a disaster. I am a just go kind of person. So, for this, I saw Brokeback Mountain, and was just crushed by the emotion of that film. Forget the gay thing for a second, it is really one of the best love story films I've seen. So, I went home really shaken up and the only way I could get it together was writing a song about it. Next day, threw a camera on a desk, Jordan threw some mics up, and we recorded it all. I think it's my best song, and personally, I like music videos like this - this is that moment." - Shane Belcourt
